Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and saving every penny you can is definitely something to be thankful for. Whether you’re feeding a family of 4 or cooking for what seems to be your entire neighborhood, we’ve composed a list of helpful ways to save before the big feast.
Before you shop:
- Determine how many guests will be attending your dinner.
- Compose a ‘mock menu’ – this will give you an idea of what you will need.
- Check your pantry and create a list of products you already have vs. what you absolutely need to buy.
- Set a budget.
- Gather a few grocery store flyers and compare prices.
- Assign platters, desserts, drinks or sides to other guests attending.
- Check coupon websites such as ‘I heart Publix’ and ‘Money Saving Mom’ for weekly deals.
- Schedule a time to shop in advance! This will ensure that you have everything you need ahead of time, and when the items are not in high demand. (At the beginning of the month preferably).
When shopping:
- Purchase items that are most important further in advance. (i.e.; Frozen Turkey ––This can be stored in the freezer weeks before with no urgency to be consumed).
- Vegetarian? There are alternative thanksgiving options suitable for you. Always inquire!
- Try to purchase most of your groceries at the same place. Don’t forget to inquire about price matching or special pricing in bulk items (for bigger families). It can also be helpful to call ahead of time so that they’re expecting you.
- Stick to your list! Don’t overwhelm yourself with purchasing additional items you may not need; this will increase your budget.
