New Year’s Resolutions for New Homebuyers

There’s nothing quite like the excitement of buying a new home and there’s no better time to start fresh than after the new year! Whether you’re dreaming of buying your first home for your growing family or looking to downsize and retire to an island-inspired paradise, Minto can help you make your dream a reality. But before you can sign on the dotted line and start planning your décor, here are a few New Year’s resolutions to put at the top of your list.Blog Photo 1

  1. Save for a Down Payment

It can take time and careful budgeting to save for a down payment but the effort is well worth it! Take a look at your spending and saving habits and see where you might be able to make some changes. Do you order takeout more than you cook at home? Are you an avid online shopper? How many subscription services do you have? Small things can add up quickly. It may be difficult to hit the pause button on certain habits but just remember that each time you choose saving over spending, you’re getting one step closer to your ultimate goal of owning a home!

Are you a first-time homebuyer? You may be able to qualify for a down payment assistance program.  Minto’s approved lenders can help you navigate through the programs and paperwork.

  1. Check Your Credit Score

When you apply for a mortgage, the first thing the lender will do is check your credit score. That’s why it’s important for you to review it first and see if you need to work on your credit. If your score is on the low side, you may still qualify for a mortgage but with a higher interest rate or larger down payment. By cutting unnecessary spending and making regular on-time payments on existing debts, you can start improving your credit score now to ensure you get the best interest rate and loan terms available.

  1. Get Pre-Approved for a Mortgage

Once you’ve started saving for your down payment and made sure your credit score is within the right range, it’s time to get pre-approved for a mortgage. Working with one of Minto’s preferred mortgage lenders – FBC Mortgage, Wells Fargo or TD Bank – will streamline the process so you can get into your new home faster!
