New Year, Better Me

We all know the saying, “New year, new me.” The new year brings an opportunity, not to become a whole new person, but to work toward becoming the best possible version of ourselves. How we define that and what we need to do to make it happen is different for everyone. Whatever your goals for the New Year, here are a few steps that can help you follow them through to completion.

  1. Write Down Your Goals

It may sound silly but the simple act of writing down your goals can make you 42% more likely to achieve them. When you put your goals down on paper, they become something your brain can visualize and start to work through the details of how to make it happen. The more specific you can get, the better.

  1. Break Down Each Goal

The more ambitious your goals are, the more time and effort they will require. Breaking down each goal into smaller steps with reasonable deadlines will help you better manage them and follow a realistic action plan.

  1. Keep a Positive Mindset

Things may not always go according to plan—and that’s okay! Don’t let the setbacks drag you down and don’t give up! Learn from mistakes, look for alternative ways around roadblocks and try to find the silver linings where you can. Remember, nothing worth having comes easy. It takes patience and perseverance but that’s what makes the rewards so much sweeter.

  1. Evaluate and Reset If Needed

As you work through your plan, make sure you periodically check in with yourself to evaluate how things are going. What steps have you taken so far? What’s left to be done? Can you meet your deadlines? If you’re on the right track, then keep at it. In some cases, you may need to make modifications or change course completely. Don’t forget that life happens and sometimes you just can’t plan for everything.

  1. Reward Yourself

Each time you accomplish something that brings you closer to your goal, celebrate it! While it’s important to keep track of what comes next, it is also important to reward yourself for the milestones you hit along the way. Not only will this make you feel great about what you’ve accomplished but it will keep you motivated to continue the journey.
